Abused OFW almost loses eyesight

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipina household service worker suffered bruises all over her body and almost lost her eyesight due to the maltreatment she received from her employer in Kuwait.

“Angela,” not her real name, saw an opportunity to escape from her abusive female employer on July 27. She fled to the Philippine Embassy to seek help.
Her ordeal started since she began working for her employer almost a year ago.
“From start pa lang, pagdating ko doon simula na ang pananakit niya sa akin,” said Angela.
The 24-year old Lanao del Sur native arrived in Kuwait on August 14, 2010 to work as a household service worker. She, however, did not expect that something like this would happen to her.
“Binubugbog nila ako, sinasampal, sinisipa. Lahat ginagawa niya sa akin…yung amo kong babae. Grabe, hindi ko talaga makalimutan yung ulo ko binubunggo niya sa semento,” said Angela.
The abuse also included stepping on her feet, burning her arm with hot iron, biting her shoulders and choking her, she said.
“Hindi ko alam kung bakit niya ako sinasaktan. Sinakal niya ako, halos ugat ko palabasin. Sabi ko tama na, masakit. Ito kinagat niya, bigla niya akong kinagat,” said Angela.
Not contented with inflicting bodily harm on her, Angela’s employer also used her long nails to poke her eyes.
“Ginawa sa kanya overtime, in a series of months, tinutusok ang kanyang mata gamit ang kuko,” said Labor Attache David Des Dicang.
“Under evaluation pa siya dahil hanggang ngayon blurred yung tingin niya. We have to get the doctor’s advice and we hope that she can recover, yung sense of sight niya mag normalize,” Dicang said.
Aside from that, her employer did not pay her wages.
“Yung first time na sahod ko, ipinakita lang niya sa akin ang pera, pina-sign lang niya ako pero hindi niya ako binigyan ng pera,” said the Pinay.
The embassy assured Angela that it will focus on her case.
“We’re taking care of her and we’re following up the case,” said Dicang.  Maxxy Santiago, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau
